Although there are a variety of backgrounds and beliefs, Engagement Rings have been around for some time, but not as long as their counterparts, the wedding ring. The ancient Romans used betrothal rings, and began the custom of wearing the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand.  They believed the Vena Amoris or the 'Vein of Love' connected this finger with the heart. In early Rome they began using metal as a ring instead of the previously used hemp, leather, bone or ivory.  During this time period, gold and silver were used infrequently, but when used, the man was showing his betrothed that he trusted her with his valuable property. Today gold, silver and platinum are frequently used to create eye-appealing and unique creations that are tailored to the personality of the wearer.
